On August 24, 2025, Sai Gon Bien Hoa Eye Hospital marked a significant milestone when MSc. Dr. Le Thai Minh Hieu – representing Sai Gon Bien Hoa Eye Hospital and serving as the sole representative from Vietnam – excellently won second prize at the 5th World Ortho-K & Myopia Control Symposium and the 3rd Vietnam Optometry Conference.
This is not only a source of pride for MSc. Dr. Le Thai Minh Hieu but also an important landmark affirming the position of Sai Gon Bien Hoa Eye Hospital, serving as a testament to the continuous efforts of the medical team in updating and applying high technology for community health.

At the symposium, the “Artificial Intelligence Model for Detecting Pathologic Myopia and Marking Lesions on Fundus Images” directly developed by MSc. Dr. Le Thai Minh Hieu and successfully applied at Sai Gon Bien Hoa Eye Hospital, was highly evaluated by the judging panel for its speed, accuracy, and powerful support for doctors in diagnosing and treating ophthalmic pathologies.

Accordingly, the AI system can correctly detect 93.06% of pathologic myopia cases and accurately identify 90.91% of healthy cases. For “Plus” lesions, the AI recognized 88.9% and only misidentified 2.8% of cases. The AI model takes an average of only 6.06 seconds to process a fundus image, which is 1.38 seconds faster than a doctor.
Furthermore, the AI’s diagnoses and grading of myopic macular pathology are not only accurate but also highly consistent and comparable with the evaluations of experienced ophthalmic experts (Kappa = 0.82).
Applied in practice, the AI model is capable of assisting doctors in detecting pathologic myopia while simultaneously identifying complex lesions on fundus images. This technology makes diagnosis more accurate, rapid, and consistent, thereby improving the quality of medical examination and treatment and saving time for both doctors and patients. The application of AI in diagnosis and treatment also opens up opportunities for early eye disease screening for millions of people, contributing to the prevention of dangerous complications and minimizing the risk of blindness.
With these impressive results, MSc. Dr. Le Thai Minh Hieu’s entry excellently won second prize at the symposium, being honored as the only speaker from Vietnam named in the international achievement list. This is not only a personal pride for the doctor but also a significant milestone for Sai Gon Bien Hoa Eye Hospital, affirming its capacity for research and the application of advanced artificial intelligence technology in ophthalmology.

The achievement of MSc. Dr. Le Thai Minh Hieu is not only a personal honor but also once again affirms the pioneering spirit of Sai Gon Bien Hoa Eye Hospital in applying modern technology to the ophthalmological examination and treatment process. This is also a great pride for the hospital, demonstrating the relentless efforts of the medical team in the journey to bring high-quality medical services to the community.
